Membership is a public statement of one’s commitment to Christ and His church. Here are two things to look at when asking the question: why church membership?
1. God desires us to be a MEMBER of a local church family.
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
– Matthew 16:18
Yes, it is through Christ we all have the right to come to the Father in one Spirit. Now you who are not Jewish are not foreigners or strangers any longer, but are citizens together with God’s holy people. You belong to God’s family.
– Ephesians 2:18-19 (new century version)
We believe that Jesus is the head of His church, and that His church is a family. As a Christian you are a member of the universal family of God. At Hope Community Church…we believe that God expects each Christian to be a part of a local body of believers who gather in Christ’s name and represent Jesus Christ and His Kingdom where they are.
2. A Christian without a church family NEEDS ONE.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
– Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
As representatives of being a member of a local body of believers, you see membership as the church taking responsibility for you and you for the church family. At Hope Community Church…we believe that if anyone stays disconnected from their local church body it doesn’t honor what God has established.
To begin looking at membership at Hope, we need to see what the Bible says about it. Here are the first steps to take when considering becoming a part of Hope Community Church as a member. Hope Community Church doesn’t see membership as having people on a list rather, this is a way of helping anyone make a connection to the family of God through the local church. Here are the steps taken after the requirements are met.
1. A profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
– John 3:3
At Hope Community Church…this is where we begin. It’s not just saying that you believe in Jesus, but it’s communicating clearly what the Gospel means to you. Also, it’s sharing how you came into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and what He is doing in your life currently.
2. Participate in believers’ baptism.
By our baptism then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead…so also we may live a new life!
– Romans 6:4
At Hope Community Church…being a member shows that baptism is a picture of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. It’s also telling the world you that your allegiance is aligned with your Lord and Savior…Jesus Christ. Believer’s baptism is celebrated within the community of faith at Hope.
3. Belief that the Bible is the absolute Word of God, and is the authority for life.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…
– 2 Timothy 3:16
At Hope Community Church…being a member agrees that God’s word is an important part of our lives. It is our instruction, how and how not to live, discipline, and how to grow in our Christian faith. It also supports us in our faith journey together.
4. A willingness to be under the authority and discipline of the elders in matters of faith and practice.
Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
– Hebrews 13:17
At Hope Community Church…being a member means being willing to live by the beliefs and standards of the church. It means voluntarily placing yourself under the church leadership’s authority. Membership makes accountability possible and accountability is essential to maintaining purity within the church.
5. A commitment to actively participate & contribute in the ministry of Hope Community Church.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
– Romans 12:1
At Hope Community Church…being a member contributes to the life of Hope through their time, treasure and talents. Through these avenues of participation and contribution, the church shows God’s witness to himself in the world, and it displays God’s glory.
1. Meet with an elder.
Meeting with an elder gives you the opportunity to sharing your faith story and to discuss attending Hope Community Church’s Discovering Hope membership class.
2. Attend Discovering Hope membership class.
During this class this is a way for people to have an understanding of Hope Community Church’s statement of faith, purpose, core values, ministry opportunities, etc. This class shares who we are and what we believe before making a decision to join Hope. At this time individuals will be given times when the next Celebration of Baptism will take place.
3. Complete membership covenant.
At the end of the Discovering Hope membership class, potential members are asked to sign the membership covenant. This covenant says that individuals agree with all Hope believes and who Hope is, and how potential members can participate at the life of Hope.
